Darkly Dreaming Dexter
by Joanne Sinchuk

Meet Dexter, a lovable serial killer who only kills bad people.
When he was a child, Dexter realized he was different; he had no feelings, and felt he was not human. And he had this overwhelming desire to kill things. His father noticed it too, and made him promise to keep it under control and only kill bad people. And Dexter has kept his promise, living happily in Miami, and only killing murderers, child molesters and other bad people. And since it is Miami, there is no shortage of such victims.
When a new serial killer comes to town, and begins his own killing spree, Dexter is bowled over. The new guy is not only invading Dexter’s turf, but is using Dexter’s own techniques and is much better at them. And he is leaving hints at the crime scenes that appear to invite Dexter to the party.
Written in the first person, this book has a voice which is both alarming and witty, interesting and repulsive, intelligent and disgusting. Being inside the killer’s head can be a very disarming experience, and it helps that Dexter is such a likable guy. He is not only likable, but clever, smart, funny, and considerate. What’s not to like? Ok, so he kills people. But only bad ones.
Dexter knows he has a mental illness that creates the Dark Stranger who lives in his head and makes him kill, and he has fears of slipping into complete senility. And since I was in his head with him, I was afraid of it too. I kept hoping for Dexter to come out in one piece.
Written with humor, this is another great Florida book. With his book set in Miami, Lindsay regularly drops comments about Miami's cops, politicians, TV stations (“Channel 7, the channel of choice for people with an eye for carnage”), newspapers, newscasters ("champion of if-it-bleeds-it-leads journalism") and of course the drivers ("the speed limit was 35. In Miami that means if you go under 50, they will run you off the road."). I love it. And I love Dexter.
