Third in the Jack Swyteck series:
Last to Die

Tatum Knight is a former contract killer. Ruthless. Conniving. And he's Jack Swyteck's newest client. Tatum is the older brother of Jack's best friend, Theo. Theo himself spent time on death row until Jack found the evidence to prove him innocent. Jack isn't so sure about Tatum.
A gorgeous young woman has been shot dead in her Mercedes on a Miami street. Tatum denies that he had anything to do with it, but he admits to Jack that he did meet her with Theor's bar, where she tried to hire him.
Sally Fenning was worth forty-eight million dollars when she died. Money had never made her happy, so she left it all to her enemies - left it for them to fight over, that is. She named six heirs in her will, but there's a catch: No one gets a penny until all but one of the heirs are dead. It's survival of the greediest.
Quickly the lawyers gear up for a bitter legal battle, but Jack braces himself for much worse. He alone knows that heir number six - Tatum Knight - is a professional killer. As the heirs begin to fall, Jack and his sidekick, Theo, are in a race against time to discover if Tatum is behind all the killing. Or is someone even more frightening, more dangerous, the odds-on favorite to be the last to die?

Next Last
Last to Die
by James Fox Miller

This is a really good read and I recommend it to anyone, but particularly to those of you who like lawyer books and books with continuing characters.
This is Grippando’s eighth book and third featuring Miami lawyer Jack Swyteck who is also the son of a former Florida Governor. Swyteck first appeared in The Pardon (1994) which was Mr. Grippando’s first book, written over several years as the author continued to be a full-time lawyer with a very prestigious South Florida law firm. He then wrote several very good stand-alone novels, all of which are worthwhile reading, and then went back to Swyteck in Beyond Suspicion (2002).
Although Last to Die can be enjoyed without reading the earlier books, I strongly recommend that the reader start from the beginning of the series in order to fully appreciate this wonderful character. I am advised by the author that his next novel also features lawyer Swyteck, and based upon what I know about that hatching plot, having read the earlier books will greatly enhance the future enjoyment of what is to come.
Last to Die has a great plot, is extremely fast-paced and keeps the reader’s interest all the way through – there is not a boring page.
Grippando is still practicing law part-time with a top-notch national firm. Being a trial lawyer myself, I am very conscious of “legal authenticity,” particularly in courtroom scenes. Grippando’s courtroom dialogue is not only first-rate, but his State Judge even makes a lot of correct evidentiary rulings. (Some practitioners may now take the opportunity to point out this is fiction.)
Get ready for a terrific story. Our hero has been retained to defend his friend’s brother – a hit man who claims he has gone straight. The hit man claims a woman tried to hire him to kill her but that he refused. Now the lady is dead and a lot of interesting things begin to happen.
This is a very over-simplified “teaser”. Last To Die is very, very intricately plotted. If you do your homework on Jack Swyteck, not only will his three stories to date bring you great reading enjoyment, but the next book will also be much more meaningful.
