Frank Cerabino is a Palm Beach Post columnist, and has been a resident of Palm Beach County since 1985. His stories about a fictionalized adult condominium residential community first appeared in the Palm Beach Post in serialized form and were beloved by readers throughout the count. They have since been consolidated into the three volumes of the Shady Palms series of books, humorously poking fun at condo life amount the retired.
When Frank and his wife, Jo, first came to Palm Beach County, they rented a condo in suburban Boynton Beach, where he gathered much of his material for the three books. He is happy to report that he and his family now live very happily in Boca Raton. In a house.

| Shady Palms |
| by Joanne Sinchuk |

The Shady Palms series is not a mystery series. I am carrying them in my store because they are fun, funny, and full of Florida flavor.
Shady Palms is an adult condominium community in Palm Beach County, chock full of "shady" characters we can all recognize in our own lives. In fact, in a preface to the first one, Cerabino says that he gets mail all the time from people who "recognize" his characters as someone living in their own communities. I recognized a few myself.
Bernie and Rose Hamstein live in C Building where Bernie is the building president. Bernie is currently faced with a crisis that has the whole community in an uproar. The renter in 26C has shown unmistakable signs of being pregnant. Since all of the residents of Shady Palms are way past the age of childbearing, and some are way past the age of even remembering child-bearing, the entire condominium complex is on full alert demanding to know what Bernie intends to do about this.
Bernie, on the other hand, has his own problems, what with meeting his bookie at Loehmann’s and sneaking around town to accidentally bump into his childhood sweetheart. Throw in the Wonder Walkers, who walk miles in the air conditioned mall and then sit for hours eating doughnuts, health nuts, the gay son who is "only going through a phase," and a genuine love story, Cerabino has painted a delightful and humorous picture that will bring a smile to all who visit Shady Palms.
As Cerabino says, "Shady Palms is everywhere." |
