Eye of Vengeance
by Sue Wilder

Be forewarned. Jonathon King’s newest book is not part of the Max Freeman series. Instead, the protagonist is Nick Mullins, a highly regarded South Florida Daily News crime reporter. Two years ago, Nick’s wife and one of his twin daughters were killed by a drunk driver. Nick has become a single father raising his other nine-year-old twin daughter. The drunk driver has been released from prison after serving only 18 months and Nick is obsessed with stalking him.
Nick is assigned to cover the shooting death of a convicted murderer. Coincidentally, the victim was the subject of one of his stories. Further investigation reveals that a prior shooting with the same MO, a single bullet to the head, resulted in the death of another subject of one of Nick’s stories. When a third man is shot, Nick realizes that the victims are part of a hit list from prior stories. Despite the skepticism of the police, Nick pursues the sniper before more bodies pile up.
Identification of the sniper is only the beginning of solving the case. It seems that the sniper has plans that involve Nick. The tension mounts as both the characters and the reader grapple with the balance between justice and vengeance.
Mr. King has done it again: An intriguing plot that is driven by the motives of superbly drawn characters. The writing is excellent. As in any good thriller, the story has an end, although the resolution is not a pat answer. The authenticity of Nick’s character reflects Mr. King’s career as a reporter. As usual, South Florida is well-described.
Eye of Vengeance is billed as a “stand alone.” This reader would welcome another book featuring Nick Mullins and/or eagerly awaits the return of Max Freeman. Clearly, Mr. King’s Edgar Award for Best First Novel for Blue Edge of Midnight was not an accident.
MUST READ!!
