Former educator Steve Alten grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia and now lives in South Florida. The father of four, his background is in secondary school teaching and coaching.
He earned a bachelors degree from Penn State University, a masters degree from the University of Delaware in Sports Medicine, and a doctorate degree from Temple University in Administration.
When he saw an article in Time magazine in 1995 on the Mariana Trench, he spent a month researching the subject, then sat down one Saturday morning and started writing his first thriller, MEG.
In the Fall of 2001, Alten established the non-profit educational program, ADOPT-AN-AUTHOR, an innovative approach that combined his novels with an interactive reader website, free curriculum materials, and direct communication between the author and student.
