Dead Roots
by Stephanie Saxon Levine

Nancy Cohen’s Bad Hair Day Mysteries have delighted me from their debut. This new one, Dead Roots, is no exception. The series features beauty salon-owner/part-time sleuth Marla Shore, a very likeable character, indeed.

In this outing, Marla’s family gathers for a Thanksgiving reunion at a Florida resort. It’s the first reunion for the family, and the first time they will meet Marla’s fiancé, Detective Dalton Vail. When dead bodies start turning up, Marla and Dalton engage in a murder investigation in the midst of Thanksgiving dinner.

I’ve enjoyed every one of these mysteries. Dead Roots, the eighth in the series, introduces some quirky characters and reunites the reader with some old friends from earlier stories.

I was particularly delighted with the spookiness of Dead Roots. Having cut my reading teeth on the Nancy Drew mysteries, I often look for that wonderful prickles-along-the-spine, gooseflesh-raising sensation that a well-written tale can deliver. Marla’s exploits at Sugar Crest resort gave me the vicarious thrill I was seeking.

It’s fun to see the relationship developing between Dalton and Marla, especially since I’ve been in on it from the beginning. It’s not necessary, though, to read the earlier books to enjoy Dead Roots. Once you have read it, though, you may want to read earlier books in this very well-told and thoroughly researched series.
