About Books (4) Reviews (3)

Dirk Wyle is a 30-year veteran of biomedical science and a long-time resident of Miami, where the novels place. His interests include multi-culturalism, the psychological impact of technology and the South Florida waters. Wyle's literary goal is to tell an exciting and memorable story against a realistic backdrop of biomedical science.

Fourth in the Ben Candidi series:
Amazon Gold

Ben signed up to be a highly paid pharmaceutical consultant, not an industrial spy in Miami.
Rebecca signed up to be a world health physician, not a hostage in the Brazilian Amazon.
But strange things can happen when you discover a new kind of gold.

Third in the Ben Candidi series:
Medical School is Murder

Ben Candidi, Ph.D., leaves his physician soul mate in Washington, DC, and returns to Miami's Bryan Medical School to take over a dead scientist's laboratory and two-year grant. And when he is offered $20,000 to write the biography prescribed in eccentric Dr. Peter Peterson's will, Ben accepts that opportunity too.
Collecting humorous anecdotes about the talkative old bachelor and WWII hero is simple, but making sense of his after-hours "crusades for science and reason" is much harder for Ben. Dr. Peterson made many enemies when he spoke out on public corruption, the right to die, abortion, animal experimentation, human cloning and meat irradiation.
And how should Ben deal with rumors that Dr. Peterson had falsified his lab data on dietary supplements? Should Ben heed anonymous warnings to stop looking for substance in Dr. Peterson's crusades?
Was is something other than a heart attack that left Old Pete floating in the canal by Bryan Medical School?

Second in the Ben Candidi series:
Biotechnology is Murder

One week before receiving his Ph.D. in pharmacology, Ben Candidi is offered a high-paying, four-day consulting job. Ben will consult for Brian Broadmoore, M.D., a Boston biomedical "venture capitalist" who has come down to Miami on business. Dr. Broadmoore will pay Ben $24,000 to visit BIOTECH and check out their scientific claims.Ben goes to work. On the third day, Ben is caught in a web of intrigue and murder.
Dirk Wyle describes a high-stakes, multi-player gamble to transform a $50,000 discovery into a $200 million stock offering. His novel takes the reader on a high-tech treasure hunt in uncharted territory between the lab bench, clinic, patent office and executive suite.

First in the Ben Candidi series:
Pharmacology is Murder

Ben Candidi is a free-spirited, ecologically-minded, bicycle-commuting novice scientist with a backpack full of dilettante interests. When he was a live-aboard yachtsman, Ben took more delight in bantering with marine mechanics at a Coconut Grove waterfront bar than in his lab bench experiments. Ben's 36-foot Cheoy Lee ketch might have remained his greatest love if he hadn't met Rebecca Levis, MD-to-be, who is now his partner for life. Ben might have turned into a boat bum if the Chief Medical Examiner Geoffrey Westley hadn't challenged his intellect with a "special project". Did a medical school professor have access to some murderous pharmacology that could have caused a sudden death?
After accepting Dr. Westley's challenge, Ben relearns forgotten truths: that science projects always turn out harder than expected; that human behavior can turn quite nasty when big money is at stake. — And the novice scientist is caught in a web of mystery and intrigue.

Amazon Gold
by Rick David

Amazon Gold is the fourth in the Ben Candidi Mystery Series which Publishers Weekly has called "a potent mix of science, business, and crime. "The protagonist, Dr. Ben Candidi, is a self-proclaimed free-lance scientist, biomedical consultant, and pharmacologist.  At this point, some readers might think - this sounds boring and highly technical. However, once Ben and his M.D. fiancée, Rebecca, begin their anthropological/scientific quest in the Amazon jungle, the intrigue and action heat up - this in turn manifests itself into a new type of thriller read.
Ben and Rebecca's attempts at "bioprospecting" flora and fauna in the Amazon may hold the key to the creation of development of new drugs to combat or maybe even cure some of the world's viruses and diseases.  As in the case of the real contemporary world, greed, avarice, and power worm their way into the story and give the reader the conflict so crucial to a fun, satisfying thriller.
Ben Candidi's highly perceptive, analytical, yet a little paranoid persona keep the story moving.  The scientific facts are relevant but don't get in the way or overwhelm the plot.
I enjoyed the vivid descriptions of an area of Miami not often utilized in fiction - the Miami River.  A dark beauty Brazilian flight attendant with questionable motives, Ben's tech-geek friend Zeekie, and glimpses of the traditions of a primitive Amazon Indian tribe in a modern
world enhance the book’s flavor.
I have now read two of Dirk Wylie's books (the other being Medical School is Murder). They do not have to read in order to be appreciated.  I look forward to the further misadventures of Dr. Ben Candidi.
