Sick Puppy

Dognapping eco-terrorists, bogus big game hunters, a Republicans-only hooker, an infamous ex-governor who’s gone back to nature, thousands of singing toads, and a Labrador retriever greater than the sum of his Labrador parts, are only some of the denizens of this outrageously funny new novel. This is Hiaasen at his riotous and mud-raking best.

Skinny Dip
by Sue Wilder

While on an anniversary cruise off the Florida coast, Chaz Perrone throws his wife, Joey, overboard in the middle of the night. Although Joey is an heiress, Chaz does not commit this act to inherit her money. Indeed, due to a failed first marriage, Joey has never told Chaz, her husband of two years, just how much she is worth. As she is a champion swimmer, Joey survives the drowning attempt and is rescued by Mick Stranahan. Mick and Joey concoct a hilarious scheme to punish Chaz.
Meanwhile, not-too-bright Chaz, thinking he has gotten away with murder, continues with his suburban life of chasing women and working for corrupt tycoon Red Hammernut. Chaz is an outdoors-hating marine biologist who bought his degree. He earns his living by providing false documentation of pollution levels for Red’s company. Chaz is monitored by Tool, Red’s personal assistant and one of the funniest characters in the book.
Clearly, the plot and characters provide a perfect vehicle for Mr. Hiaasen’s opinion of the overdevelopment of South Florida. He rails against the suburbs that are replacing the Everglades and the resulting permanent harm to the environment. There is no question as to who the good guys and bad guys are. The reader sees corruption on the corporate and governmental levels as well as in the everyday lives of the characters.
As is the case in his previous books, Mr. Hiaasen is an excellent writer, teaching the reader while at the same time providing entertainment. While reading SKINNY DIP, this reader combined a lot of headshaking with out loud laughter. MUST READ.
